About us The Ian Edwards Memorial Orphanage was started in 2002. It was a dream of Australian Ian Haynes and local Indian Pastor, Jayanandam Mannickham to open an orphanage for the many needy children in the local community. Ian died in India before the Children’s Home was able to get off the ground. Jayanandam and Lincoln, Ian’s son, have worked together since to keep the Home going. Lincoln and his wife Miriam have been helping with administrative duties including facilitating fundraising. Lincoln and Miriam visit the project each year with a team from Macquarie Life Church. They have started a Committee here in Australia to help with administration, accountability and support. The committee has worked together to launch Sponsorship for the children and staff of the Haynes Children’s Home.
The home is built in a poor rural community with little industry or infrastructure. There is high unemployment, little or no government support and many families rely on micro-business to survive. Some families are unable to feed, school, clothe and house their children. Some of these children’s parents are blind, disabled or suffer from mental illness. Some children are orphaned and their extended family cannot support them. Widows receive a pension of $20 per month from the government, which is not enough to survive. Widows can only find work as labourers (such as carrying bricks or soil on construction sites) as they are often illiterate and un-skilled. They can earn up to $2 a day for labouring work if they can get it. We are currently looking at Widow sponsorship and skills-development for these parents.
At the Haynes Children’s Home the children are given shelter, beds, food, toiletries, clothing, healthcare, spiritual guidance and most importantly, the opportunity to go to school. Being educated well will help to break the cycle of poverty, not only for these children but also the generations to come.
